Ed Monroe draws inspiration from the immediate world around him, the natural surroundings of the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as from a vibrant and detailed imagination that is constantly being stoked by his love of literature, art, music and films.

In addition to creating new work at the 4th Street Studio in Berkeley, Monroe writes science fiction. His novel Terra, a book initiated in dream-time and refined through a ten-year editorial process, was published in 2009. His fascination with turning science-fiction into reality has also led him to create prize-winning costumes at the annual BayCon Science Fiction conference at the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency Hotel and at the Halloween Hookers' Ball in San Francisco.

Ed Monroe's contributions to the Berkeley art scene are known throughout the community. His flair comes through paintings, murals, pen and ink drawings, wood carvings, and inventive costumes.

His paintings are included in the Berkeley City Club art collection, and his murals are visible in Oakland's Grand Lake Theater (the Egyptian Room), the Lawrence Hall of Science (prehistoric dinosaur backdrops), and on the Claremont Avenue freeway underpass on the Oakland/Berkeley border.

But Monroe is also an active participant in his local community. He is a founder of the Telegraph Avenue Street Fair and each year he single-handedly runs a toy drive for children who are spending their Christmas Holiday in Oakland's Children's Hospital.
